Assistant Business Manager’s Update

Greetings Sisters and Brothers,

I would like to give you all a brief update on the work I have been doing over the past few months:
  1. Nav Canada Joint OSH Policy Committee
The first face to face meeting of the year was held on May 1st   and the topics discussed included:
  • Bill C-65 - regulations that will be coming into effect in 2020
  • PPE/Protective Eyewear Entitlements – please report any issues you are having with regards to PPE entitlements to [email protected]. We are tracking the issues around entitlements and new proposed methods of interpreting the guide, so we would like to remain appraised of any ongoing issues in this area.
  • OSH Training Courses- please ensure that you are completing your OSH training courses. If you feel you are not being given enough time to complete the courses, please have a discussion with your manager to schedule some time to complete them. If there are issues with getting the appropriate amount of time, please get in touch at [email protected] and let the business office know so that we can follow up and ensure that our members are able to get the training they need to be safe at work.
  • OSH Reporting Methods- please read the article on reporting OSH incidents HERE. Members have a duty to report incidents and near misses so that your OSH team can have accurate facts when making decisions that affect policy.
  • Lead Dust in CATSA Equipment - Please read the final communique regarding the “Report on Lead Dust” HERE. If you have questions about the report, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
  1. Bargaining Information Sessions
I spent a large portion of the spring months travelling across the country to deliver training on the process that the local uses when in bargaining with Nav Canada.  I visited Gander, Halifax, Moncton, Toronto, Montreal, Cornwall, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Victoria.  The presentation also included some new information regarding proposed changes to the process that are being implemented to increase transparency with the membership.  The sessions were well attended, and good discussions took place.
If you were unable to attend one of the sessions, the presentation is available to view HERE.

  1. Steward Training
We held a Western Steward Training course on May 14th in Vancouver.  It was very well attended by stewards from Nav Canada, Treasury Board Secretariat, Yellow Pages Group, CKUA, and Rogers. It was great to see new stewards as well as some more experienced stewards coming back for some refresher training.
We will be putting out information soon regarding more training we will hold in the fall in Halifax for Stewards.
As always, I am here to answer questions and address concerns as they arise.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me whatever you are looking to discuss.

In Solidarity,

Meaghan Olmstead
