Pandemic Update

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

As we continue to move through the effects COVID-19 is having on our lives, I would like to share with you some information and guidance for the present situation.

I wanted to express my sincere and overwhelming gratitude towards you, the local’s membership. This situation is unprecedented and has presented complex challenges to our membership; however, our members have been collaborating with employers to ensure services continue to be delivered with minimal issues being reported across the country. Your continued professionalism and dedication are a testament to the work ethic that the IBEW stands for, thank you.

On a day to day basis, we are constantly evaluating our situation as well as the recommendations laid out by the levels of government.  While the business office remains physically closed, myself and the office staff continue to operate from our homes. Please rest assured your business reps and the office staff remain available to you for questions or any other issues that might arise. The quickest and best way to ensure your issue is addressed in a timely fashion is to communicate with us via our direct emails or to the [email protected], and we will endeavor to respond as soon as possible.

The local has been in constant contact with all of our employers on a regular basis.  We will continue to work with all the employers to ensure members’ concerns are addressed. We are constantly evolving how to address issues as they arise, so please ensure that you inform your steward, or business representative, of any issues you feel should be brought to our attention.

The local is sensitive to the fact that there is some anxiety about employment security, so I feel that it is necessary to inform you that to date, none of the employers that  local 2228 has agreements with have approached us to discuss anything regarding involuntary layoffs or workforce adjustment.

As the situation evolves, it is also important that we share responsibility for workplace wellness. This may include working from home or taking sick time. Please follow the advice and instructions from your employer. The wellness of our membership is paramount. If you are experiencing workplace issues related to COVID-19 and are unsure of what to do, we encourage you to contact us.

Also, while this can be a difficult topic, it is more important now than ever that you are also making the time and effort to be aware of the toll this situation is having on your mental health.  Managing your mental health during times of crisis is an essential part of the coping process, so please ensure you are able to take the time you need to talk to others and consult the many mental health resources available to you.  As always, if you are looking for resources and are unsure where to start contact any of the local’s representatives who will be happy to help you.

In solidarity,

Paul Cameron

Business Manager/ Financial Secretary
