Region 1, Local 2228 IBEW, MS Society Fund Raiser
During a regular union meeting in April of 2013, it was raised by one of our members that it would be nice to have a team bonding event. During the discussions, an idea was brought forward, that if we were having a social gathering why not raise money for a worthy cause. Since the MS Society of Canada is the IBEW 2228 charity of choice it was an obvious decision. We then decided on curling, mostly because it is a social event and would get greater participation from spouses. A small committee consisting of Wayne Pike, Paul Whelan and I (Jason Oram joined later), looked at the dates, schedule, cost, food, prizes, format etc?
The date was set for November 15th, starting at 6pm in the evening. The turnout was great with 34 people signed up to play. We played three four end games with a break between each game. Pizza was served at the first break. The second break included a draw to the button competition (won by Mary Cheeseman wife of Mike Cheeseman Gander ACC TOC) and a cake was presented to Wayne Pike in honor of his 35 years of service with Transport Canada/Nav Canada. The cake was provided by Wayne?s wife Toni.
The games were highly entertaining, but not because of the shot making. There are not many Brier hopefuls amongst our group. There were a couple of falls, none serious. There were lots of laughs with some good natured kidding happening on all sheets. Lots of incriminating pictures and videos showed up in the days following. We had prizes for first, second, and last place team. Also one for the most spirited.
In the end we fulfilled two of our main goals, having fun as a group and raising money for a worthwhile cause. With the support and sponsorship of IBEW Local 2228 Head Office in Ottawa, $654.00 was raised. A presentation was made to Zita Kavanagh ? Taylor, Chair MS Local Chapter St. John\'s/Mount Pearl just before Christmas 2013.
I would like to thank all of those who curled and those who donated without curling. A special thanks also goes out to Wayne Pike, Paul Whelan and Jason Oram for organizing this great event. Hopefully it is the start of an annual tradition.
